Sleep Apnea and How to Stop Snoring

Doctor Reveals Ten Home Remedies to Help Stop Snoring Tonight!

If you've had it with your partner's nightly cacophony or are embarrassed by your ability to wake yourself up from the snorts and chortles emanating from the back of your own throat then it's time to do something about it.  Snoring isn't only annoying its unhealthy, even deadly, and the sooner you do something to stop snoring the longer you or your partner will live. A common denominator of all sleep apnea cases is snoring.

Medical studies show obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is the cause of 38,000 cardiovascular deaths per year in the USA, and that as many as 95% of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) sufferers may be undiagnosed. One thing you can be certain of is that they snore, loudly.

So below is a free list of remedies you can start using tonight, right now to stop snoring:

  1.  Sleep on your side. Snoring is more likely if you're lying on your back. Snoring occurs because muscles in the back of the throat rub against each other to create a vibrating sound when asleep. So, at first, snoring occurs only when you are lying on your back so your tongue falls back and increases airway resistance, Dr. Eric Swanson told AME recently. He also said it's the reason, if you are one of those who snore, sleeping on your side will usually help you stop snoring.
  2. The American Academy of Otolaryngology advises you to elevate the head of your bed to stop snoring. To do this put a wedge under the head of the mattress. Four inches is recommended for the average adult. An easy home remedy is to raise the head of the bed by putting blocks under the bedposts.
  3. If you're overweight lose weight. Excessive fat, especially around the neck, squeezes the airway, and can cause it to partially collapse.
  4. Don't drink alcohol or take sleeping pills or tranquilizers. Drugs can depress your central nervous system, which relax the muscles of your throat and jaw, making snoring a probability.
  5. Self-medication is known to be a cause of sleep apnea, a life-threatening condition that has been linked with heart disease and circulatory problems.
  6.  Treat your allergies. Respiratory allergens cause snoring by making you breathe through your mouth while you sleep. Taking a decongestant or antihistamine before bedtime may help. If you have a stuffy nose then an over-the-counter saline spray, nebulizer or humidifier can prevent snoring.
  7. Get a mouth guard. Your dentist or doctor may be able to prescribe an anti-snoring mouth guard that holds the teeth together to stop the lower jaw muscles from becoming too relaxed.
  8. Stop smoking. Smoke damages the respiratory system. Avoiding tobacco products and stepping away from the bong will reduce snoring as well.
  9. Keeping a regular schedule, getting enough sleep, and going to bed and getting up at the same time each day is an effective home remedy to stop snoring.
  10. If you are pregnant and snoring you need to go see a doctor right away. Women who are pregnant will sometimes snore and snoring may rob the baby of oxygen. Pregnant women who snore should consult their pediatrician.

Remember that snoring is a common condition. Nearly everyone snores once in a while, but about twenty-five percent of us snore regularly. While snoring is irritating to others, what is lesser known is that snoring can be a serious health hazard. Heavy snoring can be a symptom of obstructive sleep apnea, a condition that is dangerous and can be life threatening.

Sleep apnea is also a cause of hypertension, strokes, and cardiopulmonary problems. So if none of the remedies we've outlined above improve your sleepless nights or rein in the nightly chortles and choking of your partner, you would be well advised to seek out professional help.

Great strides have been made in resolving sleep apnea problems and resolving an annoyance for you may save your partners life. Your doctor can prescribe various remedies including CPAP machines and respiratory aides.

So now go and do something. Try the remedies above, call your doctor, but do something to stop snoring now, you’ll live longer and more peacefully.
